Temples are living places of worship. A few simple habits make your visit respectful and smooth for you and for others. Rules differ from temple to temple, so always follow the instructions at the entrance.
Before you go
- Check the temple's official website or notice for timings, aarti schedule and any booking rules.
- Plan for crowds on weekends, festivals and special days. Early morning is often calmer.
- Carry a small bag. Many temples do not allow large bags, and some do not allow phones or cameras inside.
- Keep valid ID with you, and tell your family where you will meet if you get separated.
What to wear
Dress modestly. Clothes that cover shoulders and knees are usually appropriate, and some temples have specific dress rules. Comfortable footwear is helpful since you will remove it before entering.
Footwear, queues and behaviour
- Leave footwear at the designated place and keep the token safe.
- Join the queue calmly. Pushing is unsafe, especially with children and elders.
- Speak softly and keep your phone silent.
- Follow the temple staff's instructions about where to stand and when to move.
Offerings
Buy flowers, coconuts or prasad from authorised shops near the temple, and ask the price before you buy. Offerings do not need to be expensive. Sincerity matters more than the amount.
Photography
Photography is restricted in many temples, especially near the main shrine. Look for signs, and ask if you are unsure.
Visiting with elders and children
- Check if the temple has a separate queue or wheelchair support for elders.
- Carry water and a small snack, and take breaks.
- Hold the hands of small children in crowded areas.
