Annaprashan (First Rice Feeding Ceremony) is one of the 16 sacred Vedic Samskaras in Hinduism. It marks the transition of an infant from a purely liquid milk diet to solid food (Kheer/Rice), seeking blessings from Bhagwan Vishnu and Goddess Annapurna for the child's lifelong health and nourishment.
Selecting the Right Age & Muhurat
- For Baby Boys: Performed in even months (6th, 8th, or 10th month).
- For Baby Girls: Performed in odd months (7th, 9th, or 11th month).
Core Rituals of Annaprashan Puja
- Ganesh Pujan and Annapurna Invocation: The pandit conducts a short home puja invoking divine health blessings.
- First Bite Feeding: The maternal uncle (Mama) or grandparents feed the baby a tiny drop of sweet Payasam (Kheer) cooked in a silver bowl using a silver spoon or gold ring.
- The Choice Tray (Customary Game): A silver tray containing items representing future inclinations is placed before the baby (e.g., Book for knowledge, Pen for writing, Gold/Money for wealth, Clay/Soil for land). The item the baby touches first is believed to reveal their inner talent!
