A home mandir (Pooja Ghar) is the spiritual sanctuary of any household. When constructed and maintained according to Vastu Shastra principles, the home altar becomes a powerhouse of positive vibrations, bringing peace, prosperity, mental clarity, and protection to all family members.

1. The Ideal Direction: North-East (Ishanya Kona)

According to Vastu Purusha Mandala, the North-East corner of the house (Ishanya Kona) is governed by Lord Shiva and Jupiter (Guru). Placing your home mandir in the North-East allows pure cosmic solar energy to flow unobstructed into your living space. East and North directions are suitable secondary choices.

2. Direction Deities Should Face

  • Deities should ideally face West, so that the person worshipping faces East (the direction of the rising sun).
  • Alternatively, placing idols facing South so the worshipper faces North (direction of Lord Kuber) is also auspicious.

3. Ideal Height of the Altar

The wooden or marble mandir structure should be elevated above floor level. The feet of the deity idols should be at eye level with the worshipper when sitting down to pray.

4. Mandir Material: Wood vs Marble

Sheesham wood, Teak wood, or pure white Marble are considered most satvik for crafting home mandirs. Glass or acrylic mandirs should be avoided.

5. Crucial Places to Avoid

  • Never place a mandir inside a bedroom (if space constraints force a bedroom mandir, keep a curtain drawn when not praying).
  • Never position the mandir under a staircase or directly sharing a wall with a bathroom/toilet.
  • Avoid placing the mandir in the South or South-West corner of the house.

6. Diya and Lamp Placement

The main Ghee or Oil diya should be placed on the right-hand side of the worshipper (South-East / Agneya direction of the mandir platform).

7. Idol Spacing and Sizing

Idols in a home mandir should ideally not be larger than 9 inches in height. Avoid crowding idols together—leave small gaps between deities so air and light circulate freely.

8. Handling Broken or Chipped Idols

Never keep chipped, broken, or damaged idols (Khandit Murtis) in your home mandir as they disrupt positive energy flow. Respectfully immerse damaged murtis in a river or place them under a sacred Peepal tree.

9. Storage Guidelines Under the Mandir

Keep drawers below the mandir clean and organized. Store only sacred items like puja books, ghee, cotton wicks, and incense. Never store trash, old footwear, or household bills under the altar.

10. Daily Maintenance & Lighting

Light a diya and incense stick every evening at sunset. Keep the mandir area brightly lit and clean to attract Goddess Lakshmi's blessings.
