Karwa Chauth is one of the most cherished festivals observed by married women across India for the longevity, health, and prosperity of their husbands. Falling on the Chaturthi tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, this Nirjala (waterless) fast requires discipline, love, and strict adherence to Vedic rituals.

Early Morning Sargi Ritual (Pre-Dawn)

The fast begins before sunrise with Sargi—a traditional feast lovingly prepared by the mother-in-law. Sargi includes fresh fruits, dry fruits, sweets like mathri, and milk dishes. Eating wholesome foods during Sargi keeps the body hydrated throughout the day.

Essential Karwa Chauth Samagri List

  • An earthen or brass Karwa (pot) with a spout and lid filled with wheat or water.
  • A sieve (Chhani) for viewing the moon and husband.
  • Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha book and picture of Goddess Gaura (Parvati) & Shiva.
  • Shringar items: Mehendi, Kumkum, Sindoor, Bangles, Bindi, Chunri, and Mirror.
  • Ghee diya, dhoop, flowers, sweets, and mathri for offering.

Evening Puja Vidhi & Vrat Katha

In the late afternoon (around 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM), women gather in groups dressed in traditional red or pink attire. An altar is prepared with an image of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha. The earthen Karwa is decorated with alpana and a red thread (Kalava).

  1. Apply tilak to Goddess Parvati, Ganesha, and Lord Shiva.
  2. Rotate the Karwa seven times among the women (Karwa Phirna ritual) while singing traditional Karwa Chauth folk songs.
  3. Recite or listen to the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha attentively with wheat grains in hand.
  4. Offer mathri and sweets as prasad after the storytelling completes.

Moon Sighting & Breaking the Fast (Arghya Vidhi)

Upon moonrise, offer water (Arghya) to the Moon God through the spout of the Karwa while looking through the sieve. Look at the Moon first, then look at your husband's face through the sieve. The husband offers the first sip of water and a bite of sweet to break the fast.
