Naamkaran Sanskar is the formal baby-naming ceremony performed to bestow a sacred astrological identity upon a newborn. A name is not merely a label in Vedic philosophy—it carries cosmic vibrations that shape the child's destiny, health, and life journey.

When is Naamkaran Performed?

Traditionally, Naamkaran is conducted on the 11th or 12th day after birth (after Sutak period purification). If delayed, an auspicious date from the Panchang during a favorable Nakshatra is chosen by the family pandit.

Key Steps of Naamkaran Ritual

  1. Mother and baby take a ritual bath and sit beside the father at the puja altar.
  2. Panditji performs Ganesh Puja, Navgraha Puja, and computes the Namakshar (first letter) based on the child's exact birth time and Nakshatra quarter.
  3. Whispering the Name: The father or uncle whispers the chosen secret sacred name into the baby's right ear using a leaf or silver pipe, followed by chanting: 'Tvamev Naamaasi...' (You shall be known by this sacred name).
  4. Writing on Rice: The chosen name is written with a gold pin or turmeric stick on a tray of unbroken rice grains (Akshat).
  5. Elders bless the child with Akshat and gifts while sharing sweets with guests.
